What is Guardianship?

A private guardian is a person appointed by the Probate Court to assume the responsibility for making decisions on behalf of another person whom the court has found is unable to make those decisions independently.* We hold ourselves to the highest standards of care. It is our duty to handle our clients' affairs with the same attention and care we would give our own.*As defined by the VT Department of Aging and Independent Living.

Guardianship is a big decision… a life decision. We understand and appreciate what goes into making this type of decision and what it takes for mutual success. As such, we are guided by the following principles in everything we do.

Guardianship is a continuous life long relationship of trust.
Guardians have the legal responsibility to advocate for the client by enlisting the support of ethical, competent and caring professionals.
Guardians offer assistance and intervention in relationship to the individual’s capacities for independent decision-making.
Guardians place the welfare of the individual above all else.
